Progression Sessions

Ongoing series taking a deep dive into one specific skill for maximum development.

Topic: ADVANCED BRAKING
Saturday April 29th, 9:30am-11:30am

Join us for this ongoing series where we pick one skill or maneuver per clinic and take a deep dive into the specifics of how to do it, give tons of progressive practice, and lots of individual feedback to maximize rider development.

Advanced Braking: Are you afraid of the front brake? Want more control on steep trails? How about more confidence riding downhill in general? What’s the correct ratio of front vs rear brake for any given situation? During this clinic, we’ll start with bike set up and hand position to maximize strength and stability. We’ll refine body position to create front wheel grip and a strong stance, work on a gradual application of the levers and modulation of lever pressure based on grip, and get super comfortable controlling our speed with the front brake in a variety of terrain, including steep trails, tech sections, and corners.

  • This clinic is appropriate for all level riders wanting to get better at braking! In order to go faster with more confidence or ride steep terrain in control, really digging in to refine your braking skills is an easy way to make progress.
  • Newer riders will learn a lot about great body position to create a strong stance and get comfortable using the power of the front brake
  • Intermediate and advanced level will benefit from refining their body position and technique pulling the lever according to traction. Learn how to achieve great front wheel grip in a variety of body positions. Refine ratio of front vs rear in different terrain.

Whitney Houck is a PMBIA Level 1 Certified instructor dedicated to improving your skills and confidence on the trail for maximum fun.

  • We’ll start with an intro to listen to your previous experience and goals, then set expectations and a plan for the clinic
  • Then, we’ll analyze brake lever set up and hand position to maximize strength and control.
  • We’ll start lots of body position practice with quick stops to feel better front wheel grip and a strong stance
  • Then we’ll take it to some longer & steeper downhills to really dial in our sense of using body position to create front wheel grip.
  • We’ll also explore effective braking for cornering.
